Croquet is a sport that involves hitting ½kg plastic balls with a mallet through a series of hoops that are embedded in a grass playing court 32m x 25.6m. Pukekohe boasts its own local club with superb modern facilities that is looking to share its love of the game with new members.
Officially formed in 1913, on land behind what is now the Town Hall, Pukekohe Croquet Club moved to its current location 79 Harris Street in 1948. 1 acre of land was bought for £100 – part of Mr J Woolford’s farm!
Improvements to the lawns and buildings have continued and now the club is proud of its top-rate playing greens, clubhouse (new in 2020), and amenities.
Membership has been as high as 90, and as low as 12 over the years – currently a healthy 60 members.
The traditional game of ‘Association Croquet’ was played until around 2003 when Golf Croquet also became popular. A shorter, faster game which appeals to all ages, Golf Croquet can be learned in an hour or so to a standard where new players can join club games.
Club competitions keep the croquet club busy in season, and weekend tournaments which attract visitors as well as local players. These are sponsored by some local businesses whose support is appreciated. Many players over the years have represented the region in National events, and some in NZ teams.
Pukekohe is part of the Counties-Manukau Croquet Association, along with Papakura, Manurewa, Howick & recently Pakuranga. At one time, many districts had their croquet club eg: Buckland, Waiuku, Paerata – but they eventually closed and some members joined Pukekohe. Currently, we have members from Waiuku, Clarks Beach, Glenbrook, Miranda, Tuakau, as well as Pukekohe.
Golf Croquet is played 3 mornings and 2 afternoons every week, and play continues through the winter - the lawns only close if necessary due to really bad weather or maintenance.
Not all members are competitive, but all enjoy the exercise and friendship. Sports experience is not necessary, as free coaching is available and many competent players have not previously played much sport at all.
At least one ‘Open Day’ is held each year to introduce people to the game – no charge, and a sumptuous afternoon tea is supplied! Subscriptions are considerably less than most sports clubs, and play is 12 months a year.
A strong volunteer base means that even though the land is owned and attracts cost such as rates and water irrigation, the club is able to maintain its premises well.
