The evenings are well and truly drawing in and there is most definitely a cooler nip in the air. It’s time to get in your firewood before the rush is on or you have to stack your wood away in the rain. The horse has bolted now on getting wet wood to dry yourself as buying wet wood will not dry in time and will not burn effectively. Delivery delays can stretch out to 3 - 4 weeks in the coming months so best to get your order in early.
Carlos Ter Huurne and the team at Ignition Firewood, a Drury-based firewood supplier, is ready to supply all your heating needs right now and encourages everyone needing wood to call them now before winter well and truly set in.
“There is an expectation that when you buy wood coming into winter that it will be dry. Correct storage and drying is essential. Even wood that is ‘seasoned’ can actually be wet and not be as effective as our kiln dried product. It can be a very expensive mistake to make as you end up paying twice for wood for the winter. Wood must be dried before it is put into a shed - we kiln dry our product before it is shed stored - so when it comes time to deliver, we know it is dry.
We’re the only firewood company in Auckland that kiln dries commercial quantities of firewood in one of 3 kilns, giving us guaranteed dried wood. It’s heated to 110 degrees and held for 24 hours, forcing the moisture out. We have shedding to hold over 5000 cubic meters of wood out of the rain and our trucks are all covered so that when the wood is delivered it is delivered as dry as when it left the shed.”
Carlos and his team have spent the summer stacking, cutting, splitting, drying and delivering a small mountain of quality firewood - their yard is always hive of activity. Their Italian processor is capable of cutting and splitting logs up to 8m long and 1.2m in diameter, with the push of a button. The wood is largely derived from land clearances which is no use to land developers and would just be burned on site. For some suppliers, firewood is a sideline business that keeps them busy in winter. For Ignition Firewood it is 365 days a year, nonstop.
Ignition Firewood has a range of kiln dried, shed stored woods ready for delivery now. There are softwoods like Pine available from $75 a half cube, hard wood like gum and Tea tree but the most common wood sold is the Hotmix firewood currently selling for $85 a half cube. Minimum spend for delivery is $250.
“Hotmix is a combination of hard, slow burning wood such as gum and soft fast burning wood such as pine. It may also contain oak, macrocarpa, poplar, and black wattle. It is popular as it provides both fast starting and long burning firewood. With every delivery we include a good quantity of each to ensure customers are kept well catered for once the weather turns colder.”
There’s nothing like the aroma of freshly split firewood in your shed, whether it’s the resinous tang of pine or cypress or the more spicy scents of some of the less common timbers. Rather like the smell of new mown hay freshly stacked in the barn, it gives a reassuring feeling of being prepared for winter and Ignition Firewood can make that happen for you today! They make deliveries all over Auckland six days a week and ordering is simple - they’re only a phone call away on 0800 WOOD NOW (0800 9663 669) and all trucks have mobile EFTPOS for ease of payment. Or you can bring your trailer in to the yard at 1257 Great South Road, Ramarama, only two minutes from the motorway.
